Boaz Vacation 2012 - Part 1

I realize that I need to fill in a huge gap from end of May - September, but will need to do that later.  I want to chronicle our 2012 vacation adventures as they are happening so that I don't forget them.  I can't let the girls out-journal me, as they are writing a day-by-day account of our adventure in their 'diaries'

Saturday, Sept 15th

Woke up early and finished loading the van.  Dropped Snickers off at the pet resort.   Hopefully he will enjoy his time there.    Was on the road most of the day.  We made it to about an hour or so east of Nashville to a little town called Cookeville.   We lucked out and got a suite for the price of a room at Comfort Suites.   Ate dinner at Cracker Barrel, swam in the pool and hit the sack.

Sunday, Sept 16th

Hit the road relatively early and made it to Memphis around 2ish.  Checked in at the hotel and headed down to Beale Street for a late lunch.  On the way there, we went by our old house.  It's still standing and looks so small and old now.   Funny how perspective changes after 10 yrs.

Ate some good BBQ at BB Kings restaurant and was entertained by a blues band.  Even though it was a bit loud, the girls liked it.   Took a trolley ride around the city.  Was a good way to show everything to the girls.  Did some shopping around Beale St.  As we were driving through the not-so-nice areas of Memphis, realized how sad it made me feel to see the poverty and crime-ridden streets still going strong.    The hotel was nice and having a suite made things much nicer with kids.  However, the pool was broken, so we had to go next door to the other hotel to use the pool.  Not so convenient ... but they did have fresh baked cookies each afternoon :-)

Monday, Sept 17th

What to do on vacation when it's raining?   Did some driving/sightseeing to Baptist Memorial so that Lily could see where she was born.   After holding up traffic to take the picture under the big sign, she promptly slipped and her entire back-end was covered with mud.

Did a "drive-by" of Graceland. Gates were open, guess Elvis was expecting us.

Went to an indoor fun place "Incredible Pizza" that the hotel recommended.  Had a blast there!

Shopped at the local mall.   Not much variation from your typical mall, but at least we stayed dry.
The rainy day fun wore the kids out..

Tuesday, Sept 18th

The sun finally came out and gave us a PERFECT DAY to visit the zoo.   After a stop at my FAVORITE place to eat in Memphis, of course.   The Blue Plate looked and tasted exactly the same as I remembered it.

The Memphis Zoo is one of the best zoos I've visited.   They now have two pandas that arrived after we left.   We spent a long time watching the male eat bamboo.   So fascinating!   Everyone really enjoyed their day there.

Wednesday, Sept 19th

Grabbed a hotel breakfast and made one last visit to the Mississippi River before heading east to Nashville.   The girls grabbed rocks by the river and we were on our way.

Three or so hours later we arrived in Nashville...

Grabbed some quick lunch, checked into the hotel and spent some time by the pool (that was in our hotel this time)

Ventured downtown to sight see.  Loved the downtown area.    It has Beale Street beat hands down!  Did a ton of shopping and even got our names made by a guy on the street.

Afterward, we went to eat at the Rainforest Cafe.  Great atmosphere, but the food was mediocre at best.    OpryMill Mall was fun to explore, with lots of outlet stores to check out.

No sign of Elvis in Memphis - but found him in Nashville
